The film if great. Patch Adam's ideas e life were wonderful and have changed many people's lives.
To me, the most significant moment of the film is when Patch says, "You treat a disease, you win, you lose. You treat a person, I guarantee you, you'll win, no matter what the outcome."
How would this quote be adapted to the corporate world? Maybe something like You focus on the result, you win, you lose. You focus on the people, I guarantee you, you'll win, whether you achieved the results or not.
It is an adaptation, so it may not be perfect, but for the purpose of scaffolding the corporate schemata, the reflection seems worth it.
Companies want positive financial results. There is no harm there, especially because if a company is financially healthy and profitable, that means that all the stakeholders involved in the business have been satisfied: the government, through taxes; the employees; the suppliers; and the owner or the shareholders.
On the path to profit, the company may promote wellness to the community, through socially responsible projects and actions.
The conclusion is that it is healthy that companies focus on the results.
What management theories and practices say is that one (company, CEO, manager) can only achieve their results through people. The most definite and straightforward definition of leadership is that a leader is the one who gives results. But everyone knows that to be an effective leader and give results, one needs people.
Patch Adams has a very simple view of the practice of medicine. He clearly shows and states that he wants to connect with people, so his primary focus is the patient. Patch wants to promote the well being of the patients.
We cannot be so naïve to believe that the same focus may be given in the corporate world.
Because if this, the second part of my adaptation You focus on the people, I guarantee you, you'll win, whether you achieved the results or not is not applicable in the corporate world.
If an employee who has a leadership position and should give results to the owner or shareholders does not accomplish their objectives, they will not last long. Nevertheless, by focusing on and developing the people, the results will naturally come.
Easy to be done? For some people, it is natural. For most, a difficult task.
Also, there are obstacles on the way of focusing on people. The company's culture and beliefs, the level of competitiveness of the market you are inserted in, the style of you superiors, the human development policy of the company. As in many other corporate aspects, one should be in a company with which one shares many of their beliefs and postures.
Let's rephrase the adapted quote, You focus on the result, you win, you lose. You focus on the people, I guarantee you, you'll achieve the results most of the time.
Well, it seems to be more appropriate now.
After watching Patch Adams, one cannot avoid the comparison with the Doutores da Alegria. Well, Doutores da Alegria are clowns who pretent to be doctors (they are specialized in besteirologia) and Patch Adams is an actual doctor who pretends to be a clown. I'm sure patients are very glad to be near any of them.
Now, to end, some poetry. Patch started reading this to Carin, the girl he loved, but he never had the chance to finish it.

Sonnet XVII (100 Love Sonnets, 1960)
I don't love you as if you were the salt-rose, topaz
or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:
I love you as certain dark things are loved,
secretly, between the shadow and the soul.
I don't love you as if you were the salt-rose, topaz
or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:
I love you as certain dark things are loved,
secretly, between the shadow and the soul.
I love you as the plant that doesn't bloom and carries
hidden within itself the light of those flowers,
and thanks to your love, darkly in my body
lives the dense fragrance that rises from the earth.
hidden within itself the light of those flowers,
and thanks to your love, darkly in my body
lives the dense fragrance that rises from the earth.
I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,
I love you simply, without problems or pride:
I love you in this way because I don't know any other way of loving
I love you simply, without problems or pride:
I love you in this way because I don't know any other way of loving
but this, in which there is no I or you,
so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand,
so intimate that when I fall asleep it is your eyes that close.
so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand,
so intimate that when I fall asleep it is your eyes that close.
Pablo Neruda
All the best to you all.
